Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Hi,

My Evo10 is controlled via Octopus and has been since they spun up that service. I noted today that despite the brilliant sunshine, the panel output is matching the household load, where typically it would sit at the output limit of 3.6kW, with excess being exported. Essentially, it's not exporting at all.
I checked back and this seems to have been happening since 8th September. Has anyone else noticed this, who has their battery/ AIO controlled by Octopus?

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Have you looked under quick settings to see what your export limit is set to? If this is zero, then it would explain the behaviour.

Sorry, I don't have an AIO, but you can still check the above settings, also verify the firmware is current (might have changed recently?) The other is a system restart at some point to rule out a bug in the system.
Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Hey,

Thanks for the response. The Export Limit is set to 30kW. From memory, that's been set like that since installation.

Tempted to 'Disconnect' the Evo just to see if the exporting returns. I assume it would be a right faff to 'Reconnect' it again however.

Cheers,

Paul

Good to know the export is set high enough, so shouldn't be that then.
I think I would reboot the system before the faff of pairing the device again :D

Have you been able to check upon the installed firmware against the list from Will in the forum?

EDIT: As you are running HA, just check any active automations you may have are not playing up.
Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Thanks. Yes I think you're right, I'll try a reboot before anything else.

And thanks for the FW list, I've checked and I have a 'newer' slave FW than is mentioned, I have v1.01. My BCU FW looks to be older, at v1.001. If I'm reading the list correctly. All are up to date according to the app.

Something I also noted yesterday is that the app on my phone updated on 7th September and includes a functionality I've not seen before. It's called 'Meter Compensation' and it allows you to prompt the inverter to export more to import more, on a sliding scale. By default, it's set to 1w towards the export more side.
This may or may not be new functionality, I don't use the phone app in any more detail than checking normal stats and updating firmware.

I don't have any automations for the PV, so that's one areas I don't need to dive into.

Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Hi Paul,

Hope the reboot does something, if not it just rules that out.

The FW on the App will either show 'LATEST' on the end or nothing, if nothing it usually is because they pulled the function for a while. Not always a bad thing if missing, Good you have checked the list though, at least you have indication of status of them.

Meter compensation was added a while back, you can adjust if you feel the need viewtopic.php?p=17996#p17996 You would have missed it, as you say, you don't use the App often.

And thankfully HA automations can be ruled out also, that just leaves a FW bug/setting or Octopus being muppets.
Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Just checked the phone app again and each attribute has 'Latest' next to the FW version.

I could be imagining it but, I'm sure there's something different today. I just checkes what the system is doing and the load was greater than PV output so, it was taking energy from the battery despite the battery only being at 28% SoC. I'm convinced in a similar scenario yesterday that the PV deficit was being bolstered by the grid and not the battery.
I guess with Octopus in control anything could be happening.
A known case in point - there was a Charge Pack session yesterday evening and they'd typically charge the battery during off peak hours once the session had completed. They didn't do that last night. The battery ran all the way down and the PV is now charging it. And again looking back, that seems to have been the case since 8th September...

Thanks for linking your post re the Meter Compensation. It seems to be a useful feature. Once This current issue is resolved, I'll have a look at that and see what I can achieve with it.

Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Hi Paul,

I am guessing that the charge pack add-on for Octopus is doing this automation? It's a newish feature that I am aware of, but don't know in great detail. Perhaps it's still going through some teething issues (the PV covering load only?)

After rebooting, I guess next step is to unpair and rebind in Octopus account, and if that fails, then you will have to contact Octopus for support.

There is an offset calculation in 2nd paragraph here, viewtopic.php?p=18719#p18719 for a simple enough equation. Only makes a difference to your import bill for the longer term, those few Watts add up over a year for example. 0.3kWh daily @25p kWh is ~£27 import cost annually, but if you are someone that wants to be as close to energy independence, then a 13W export bias is worth it.
Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Yes exactly that. Octopus make a point of stating this with every notification they send on the Charge Packs sessions, essentially making customers believe that they'll not be out of pocket letting Octopus control the discharge/ charge processes. Or at least they did. I've just checked the emails from them and the messaging changed significantly between 5th September and 7th September.

I contacted Octopus yesterday, not one to sit on my laurels. So awaiting to read their comments. The more I look at this, the more it seems like it is something they're doing.

Agreed on the difference that little adjustment can make and I've very conscious about how much power we need to draw from the grid, even more so as we have an export/ import limit set by the DNO. So, we're can only export at a max rate of 3.68kW or 3.6kW as the inverter doesn't support more than 2 decimal points in those settings.

Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Just by way of an update - I powered off the entire system on Saturday afternoon, leaving it off for around 25 minutes or so. Once I powered it back up, normality resumed. Seeing the exporting taking place was a joy to behold!

Interestingly, I got a response back from Octopus this morning and they've stated they were receiving error responses from the instructions they were sending. They suggested to remove and re-add the AIO in their app. I've responded asking whether their instructions are going through without error now, so I'll await their response.

This has got me thinking, I wonder if it's possible to engineer some sort of notification system for these situations, with their app pinging the customer when instructions don't go through. I think I'll request that as a feature.

Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
I hope it remains stable now, sounds like part of the FW crashed.
Re: Octopus controlled Evo10 solar output only fulfilling load since 8th September
Yes, fingers crossed. I think it was a first however and fortunately, I noticed it reasonably quickly. At least I know the ole IT fix will sort it, if it happens again.

Oh and I meant to say, I can't use the Meter Compensation feature in the app. I get a "Third party control" error when I attempt to save the change. Slightly annoying!

I think the AIO's when they came out, had poor FW. Features broken and missing, so perhaps in time they will fix all the bugs.
